Ballyliffin Golf Club
Ballyliffin was,
until very recently only spoken of in whispers by the privileged few who
had chanced upon it, so much was it regarded as the ultimate hidden gem.
As Ireland’s northernmost golf club, it is at a place where the world
seems to come to an end, a sublimely isolated wilderness bounded by
sheer cliffs and rocky islets, a place where even the fresh air is
reputed to be the world’s purest, and where multifarious birdlife
proliferates in supreme liberty.
The Old Course
The Old Course at Ballyliffin has
long been regarded as the ultimate hidden gem of links golf. It has a
terrain so perfect for golf with its amazingly contoured fairways that
twists and tumbles in every conceivable direction - a natural golf
links. The Old Course has a charm, character and curiosity all of its
own. Here for the first time, the golfer can appreciate the full glory
of the links as it unravels between the sea and encircling hills. The
Old Links offers countless superb holes including the 3rd, played
directly towards the ocean along a perilously narrow fairway and the
legendary par 3, 5th with its elusive green perched between two large
sand hills but arguably the best hole is kept until last, where the
fairway wriggles along its entire length, coming to rest at the foot of
the clubhouse no doubt one of the finest finishing holes in golf.
The Glashedy Links
Glashedy Links adjoins the Old
Course at Ballyliffin and provides a roller coaster tour of this
remarkable landscape. At many 36 hole complexes, the newer golf course
is often perceived as inferior. Nothing could be further from the truth
at Ballyliffin and Glashedy Links is recognized as a great championship
course and probably the better of the two. Glashedy Links stands today
as a supremely testing and stunningly beautiful links course. Glashedy
is destined for recognition as one of the world's finest links. The
greens are generally large and full of subtle undulation, while many are
two tiered, putting an emphasis on accurate approach shots.
